This minimalist yet feminine draped midi dress by Yohji Yamamoto is crafted from a lustrous charcoal grey coated rustling silk. The sleeveless piece is fitted in the bodice (darts at bustline), with an A-line skirt and features a buttoned front. The draped capelet-like collar can be worn in different ways. The dress is unlined with a coppery inside. It is labeled "Yohji Yamamoto, Made in Japan" and tagged a size M.
Designer Yohji Yamamoto was born in Tokyo, Japan, in 1943. He studied law before turning to fashion and launched his own company in 1974. The only Japanese fashion designer to have been awarded the French Chevalier de L'Ordre des Art et Lettres, Yamamoto is also the recipient of the American Fashion Award. He is known for the avant-garde tailoring featuring Japanese design aesthetics. His signature often oversized silhouettes in mostly dark colours feature drapery in varying textures. Yohji Yamamoto's custom-made textiles use a variety of traditional Japanese techniques. All his fabrics are made in Japan to his own specifications, making them unique to his designs. "Fabric is everything. Often I tell my pattern makers: "Just listen to the material. What is it going to say? Just wait. Probably the material will teach you something."" – Yohji Yamamoto.
Excellent vintage condition. Some discolouration on the inside that seems to be production-related though.
