A breathtaking vintage maxi dress from the 70s by iconic British designer, John Bates for his renowned label Jean Varon. In a black cotton voile, which is unlined on the top to retain the sheer, lightweight quality of the fabric making it look so current and more versatile - allowing it to be worn with just a bra / bandeau underneath or a slip. The skirt is so vibrantly printed with an op art style pattern in hues of orange, purple and white.

The balloon sleeves are voluminous, giving a luxe hippie feel whilst the frilly / ruffle edges give a gothic, almost victorian touch. So versatile, this gown would be perfect for in the evening / party, as a striking boho day dress or worn on a summer vacation. In the book 'John Bates: Fashion designer' by renowned fashion collector and historian, Richard Lester, there are early sketches of this dress stating that "For John [Jean Varon] the fabric came first... his designs became wearable works of art".
