“Leather, sport and a tradition of refined elegance”, were Émile-Maurice Hermès’ own words to sum up his eponymous family maison. World-renowned for their natural materials, exquisite craftsmanship and signature rich colour palette, Hermès has remained an epitome of French luxury since the first part of the 20th century. Founded as early as 1837, Thierry Hermès started off manufacturing bridles for the carriage trade moving onto saddlery which was sold to the world elite. In the 1920s, handbags, clothing and accessories followed, but it wasn’t until the 1930s that Hermès introduced some of their most iconic designs including the Kelly bag in 1935; the silk scarves in 1937; and the chain link bracelet in 1938. At this time, Hermès also manufactured their first watches. The horse logo and signature orange brand shade came about in the 1950s, and the Birkin bag in the 1980s. Today, the Bolide, Constance and Picotin bags make sublime everyday staples; while the Garden Party, Jypsiere and Lindy keep up the brand’s contemporary edge, alongside the Medor stud detail clutch, watch and jewellery. Over the decades, Hermès has hosted a line-up of prominent head designers, including Belgian deconstructionist Martin Margiela and French fashion’s “enfant terrible”, Jean Paul Gaultier. The label is currently overseen by Nadège Vanhee-Cybulski, Pierre-Alexis Dumas and Véronique Nichanian.
Hermès discreet, almost secretive brand persona perfectly matches their traditional, well-preserved business model. Still to a significant extent family run, Hermès prides themselves in their hand-made in France, limited edition production, where the waiting time for a highly sought-after Birkin bag is between 6 months to a year. In the words of late CEO Jean-Louis Dumas: “We don’t have a policy of image; we have a policy of product”.
