The poster child of Italian glamour and decadence, Gucci has risen to become one of Italy’s most successful luxury fashion exports. Founded as a humble Florentine luggage company by Guccio Gucci in 1921, the brand soon expanded to other leather items like handbags and shoes (including the brand’s signature loafers which are still in production today), alongside silk scarves and knitwear. In the 1950s and 1960s, Gucci enjoyed some celebrity stardom with film stars sporting their fashion and accessory designs in global lifestyle magazines, which gave the brand’s growing reputation a new upswing. After a downturn caused by family disputes in the following decades, Gucci saw new beginnings in the 1990s when Tom Ford was appointed a creative director and tapped some radical new design and operational grounds. Today, current creative director Alessandro Michele has re-established the brand’s eccentric, decadent persona through bold 1970s-nodding prints and imagery, which has increased Gucci’s relevance amongst the contemporary fashion crowd.
Bags, luggage and loafers aside, Gucci is responsible for numerous designs which have made it to the fashion history books. Their iconic bamboo handbag handles were first introduced in 1947 and have adorned some of their most coveted designs to date. The horsebit snaffle detail was born in the 1960s and functioned as an alternative fastening decor on handbags. Gucci’s monogram GG print and hardware (most notably the belt buckle) was introduced in 1964, and in 1966, the brand designed the iconic floral print ‘Flora’ for Grace Kelly, which still influences the designs to date.
