In "House of Gucci", Ridley Scott's latest film based on a true story about the complex tensions around the Gucci family and their legacy, an abundance of opulent iconic fashion has been brought back to life, reminding us of the importance of the fashion house. Our expert team have taken a look at the iconic Gucci designs featured in the film, and picked out our favourite iconic pieces.
The film takes place in 1980’s and 90’s Milan where most key looks from the 65 costume changes throughout the film were handpicked from the Gucci archives by award-winning costume designer, Janty Yates.
Many of the looks have a great focus on iconic handbag styles from the house of Gucci, such as the Jackie bag and Bamboo handle bags, and the signature GG monogram logo can be seen in the styling in several key scenes throughout the film.
According to Yates, it was particularly important to the lead actress in the film, Lady Gaga, that there were no duplicate looks in any of her character’s scenes, including accessories and jewellery. This resulted in an extension of the on-set wardrobe of bold, statement jewellery, with unique vintage heritage pieces brought in from the Italian luxury jewellery house Bulgari and French Boucheron.
Due to the focus on 80’s and 90’s archived accessories and signature logo handbags in one of the most highly anticipated films of 2021, the demand for vintage Gucci statement pieces on the pre-owned market has skyrocketed since its release.
Despite Gucci being the centre of attention, this film has also triggered a greater desire for bold custom jewellery from other brands of iconic importance of that time, such as Chanel and YSL.
Another impressive styling aspect of the movie worth paying attention to are the many vintage Gucci watches that can be seen on the cast throughout, which were all sustainably acquired through the resale market.
While the movie is mostly focused on the fall of the Gucci house, it still highlights the way Gucci has managed to reinvent itself. Which, in more recent years is something we have also witnessed through the native Alessandro Michele's taking over the reins at the brand. An industry disruptor and great visionary, Alessandro has been able to change the brand's fashion system from existing on a linear model to a supporter of the pre-owned luxury industry, becoming a great advocate for sustainability.
