Fashion Month Breakdown: The Key Trends for Autumn-Winter 2023 and How to Get The Look

Open for Vintage gives you the inside scoop on the best trends for Autumn & Winter 2023, so you can be this year's most fashionable friend.

The editorial world gets the inside scoop on the upcoming trends for the next season at Fashion month – it’s how editors and bloggers always seem to have the perfect wardrobe to fit every popular style. As we draw to the end of the New York, London, Milan and Paris fashion weeks, there are a few trends which have crept into each runway, despite the very different aesthetics of each of the cities. And we’re here to tell Open for Vintage readers how to recreate these looks at home.

Leather Meets Lace

A fresh take on what it means to dress ‘feminine’. Lace and tailoring were often seen on the runway for Fall ‘23, but wearing them together will be an even bigger trend. Designers used lace and created alluring sheer layers, whether in the form of bralettes, dresses or tights. Though elegant alone, the sartorial flair – and Parisian edge – comes from pairing delicate pieces with something ‘Masculine' and structured, such as a blazer, tailored trousers or an overcoat.
This is easy to recreate with items you likely already own, a welcome change in a sea of micro-trends and throwaway clothes. Recreate the look by pairing a smart shirt and trousers with dainty jewellery or try a sheer top or bralette under an oversized blazer with a sleek structured bag?

Graphic Prints

At London Fashion Week, many of the showcasing designers are fresh from art or fashion school, meaning collections tend to have an experimental edge. The Fall ‘23 runway was flooded with graphic body prints, think vintage Jean Paul Gaultier, as well as clashing patterns and prints.
This trend can be re-created by pairing a checkerboard print with polka dots or art-inspired prints with stripes – the more mismatched the pattern, the more intentional it looks. And don’t be afraid to let your accessories do the talking.

Sparkle Season

A godsend for all the magpies. Think of an 80s party outfit, full of ruffles and colours and shimmer. As we move into a post-pandemic world, it’s finally time to go back to Friday night parties, which trickle into Saturday morning. Buckle up for a season of sparkle.
To get the look go for anything embellished, whether clothing or accessories – or both if that’s your thing.
It's all about beads, sequins and crystals that make the whole look shimmer with joy.

Paint The Town Red

Red is the colour of the season. The Fall ‘23 runway is usually rife with jewel tones, but this Fashion Month highlighted red as the only one worth wearing – think of it as Barbie-core if Carrie was Barbie. The tone injects sensuality and maturity into every look, and it’s the perfect colour for those who want an eye-catching aesthetic.
Follow the trend with a full red look, or opt for a pop of colour with red jewellery or a handbag. Either way, the red lady is here to stay.

Florals for Fall

Bold, busy floral prints appeared on nearly every runway for the Fall ‘23 season. Florals for spring and summer are to be expected, but florals paired with latex and leather were all over the runway this Fashion Month – and are easy to translate into everyday wear.
Juxtapose a floral print with something punky to be fashion-forward this season but still get wear out of your summer pieces. Pair a pretty dress with latex and leather, or try leather trousers with a floral bag to make them feel modern.
