This is an incredible 1940s-style early 1970s (c. 1973) Biba dress in black, grey and ivory bonded wool jersey with the characteristic accentuated and padded shoulders. Its twin is documented in the book “The Biba Years 1963-1975“ (see last picture). It features a fitted black bodice that shows ivory-coloured angled lapels and a square decorative button in the center. The grey skirt flares towards the hemline. The black long sleeves are narrow and end in ivory-coloured fold-over pointy cuffs. The dress is unlined, zips up the center back and finishes just below the knee. It wears the printed art nouveau label.

A rare and highly collectible piece of fashion history. And looking fashionable as well!

Biba was founded by Barbara Hulanicki and her husband, Stephen Fitz-Simon in London in 1963. It began as a small mail-order firm for ready-to-sew garments until in 1964 the couple opened Biba's first boutique with fashion that was for the young and carefree. After moving to two other locations Biba became “Big Biba“, which opened in 1973 in a seven-story Art Deco building where it remained until its closure in September 1975. At that time Biba was a way of life as much as a dress shop. Twiggy, Edina Ronay, Patti Boyd, Julie Christie, The Supremes, Sonny and Cher - everyone shopped there. Today Barbara Hulanicki resides in Miami, Florida where she has an interior design business.
