Antique Victorian oval locket set in sterling silver. The locket features a ball and ivy design. In the Victorian era the Ivy leaf symbolised love, affection, fidelity, friendship and affection. The locket opens to review two areas where pictures can be placed. The locket has a number of marks indicating the piece is set in sterling silver, made in Birmingham, England in 1876. These Victorian lockets are very rare and highly sought after.   HISTORY The locket has a long rich history, during the earlier centuries, they were used to carry good luck charms, mementoes, hair, powder and even poison. The locket secured its romantic status during the Victorian era, it became the most mysterious and alluring pieces of jewellery. Only the wearer knows what secrets lie within the locket. It was to be the ultimate love token. Pictures held in lockets were originally miniature portraits, these were gradually replaced with photographs.   HALLMARKS B, Anchor, Lion   MEASUREMENTS The locket measures 5.7cm / 2.2" (including bail) in height, 3.5cm / 1.3"  in length.
