This rare and collectible Yves Saint Laurent Rive Gauche pleated tiered silk skirt comes with a long 8 cm - 3.1" wide matching sash. The three tiers consist of chocolate, maroon and a vibrant ultra violet pleated silk taffeta and are a perfect example for Yves Saint Laurent's talent of creating incredibly beautiful colour combinations. The fabric is crisp and truly stunning! This high-waisted midi skirt features a 3 cm - 1.1" wide elastic waistband and is partly lined (see penultimate picture). It can be worn in different ways as the sash is detachable. The skirt has the added provenance of coming directly from a lady that worked for the YSL shop in Munich so has not been on the market prior to this. The label reads "Saint Laurent Rive Gauche Paris, Made in France". It is tagged a French size 40.
Yves Saint Laurent was born in 1936 in Oran, Algeria and began his career as an assistant of Christian Dior. When Dior died in 1957, he became the artistic director. In 1962 he opened his own fashion house, and in 1966, he created his ready-to-wear line Rive Gauche. By the 1980s, Yves Saint Laurent was a true icon. He was the first living designer to receive a solo exhibition in New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1983. He died in 2008.
Excellent vintage condition. Seems unworn except one small pulled thread on the inside of the sash - absolutely not visible from outside.
